Best wishes to all in 2010!
Instead of goals and resolutions, each year I create a theme for myself to stay inspired throughout the months. The basic gist is to create intention and purpose around what you want for the year. Then create a mantra or catch phrase for yourself that will remind you of that intention - it’s a theme (For more information see “Stay Inspired Throughout the Year”).
I’m still working out my theme this year, but with the birth of my son, my theme this year will be about nurturing, my son as well as myself. . . Feel free to share your inspirational and motivational thoughts for 2010!
Make Happiness Yours in the New Year!

Particularly in these times of high unemployment, not only do I get inquiries about business, but I also get questions regarding career change and best strategies for job searches. As part of the coaching process, the job seeker updates their resume, researches the companies and industries they’re interested and goes through, what I call a “Personal Career Inventory.” This inventory includes a career planning assessment which not only uncovers specific personal strengths and weaknesses, but also shares some insight into ideal work environment and communication preferences.
Most recently I was interviewed by Sarah Ruppenthal of the Maui Weekly Read the rest of this entry »

One of the great things about volunteering with the Maui SCORE chapter is that I meet wonderful business owners and people involved in the business community. As the host of the SCORE monthly radio show, “Akamai Business” (akamai means smart or clever in Hawaiian), I have an opportunity to share these resources to the listening public.
In July, I talked with Bob Sommers of Internet Marketing Association of Hawaii about internet marketing, what it is and how it could help your business. Bob is the host of Recognized Expert Marketing show on Maui and is a full time Internet Marketer and Podcaster. If you’d like to listen to the audio, listen to it at (click on the date July 6, 2009): http://susankimcoaching.com/blog/score-radio-show/

Lately my life has been about snacking. I like to think of it as eating my 6 square meals a day. It’s fun, because I get to eat. However, it can also be tiring - thinking of portions and what to eat that’s healthy, or at least not bad for me.
Actually many studies have shown that eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day is better for you. The body is better able to metabolize food and use the energy more efficiently when “fed” throughout the day. Also, hunger is less likely to set in and we prevent the binging that might happen during the conventional mealtimes of breakfast, lunch and dinner when our bodies are “starving” for food. In a recent business blog post, I talked about using your team for support in getting ideas, gaining a different perspective and creating more options (Three tips to get through the recession). This strategy is not just for business.
At home, solicit the feedback and suggestions from family members. Call everyone together and discuss the current economic situation as well as the current financial status of YOUR family. Read the rest of this entry »

As many of you know, I am a huge supporter of the American Cancer Society. Today is their “Great American Smokeout,” designed to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for one day. Please share the following information with your friends, family and colleagues.
Good luck and Kudos to all you “quitters” out there!
(Information provided through the American Cancer Society Great Smokeout press release)
ATLANTA – November 18, 2008 – Thursday, November 20, is the 33rd Great American Smokeout, and the American Cancer Society continues its legacy of providing free resources to help smokers quit. The Great American Smokeout was inaugurated in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for one day. Now, 39.8 percent of the 43.4 million Americans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year, and the Great American Smokeout remains a great opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good.
With all the resources available to help smokers quit, there has never been a better time to quit smoking, and the American Cancer Society is here to help. If you smoke, make a plan and set the Great American Smokeout, November 20, 2008, as your quit date. By calling the American Cancer Society Quitline® at 1-800-227-2345, people who plan to quit will be able to speak with a trained counselor and receive free, confidential counseling.
Studies have found that Quitline can more than double a person’s chances of successfully quitting tobacco. Callers to Quitline Read the rest of this entry »

Anger is a good thing.
Or rather, it is an emotion that can have positive benefits that too often (and perhaps too readily) are looked upon negatively. Anger can be unnerving and uncomfortable, but totally getting rid of anger would mean that you won’t have that certain mechanism to help self-preservation, establishing healthy boundaries, determining wants and needs, and just not getting hurt overall.
Anger can protect us from that which may be harmful.
The “problem” or issue of anger comes into play when people react with anger inappropriately or for manipulative and self-serving reasons; when anger becomes abusive. Oftentimes when we react “in anger” the result is a shift from anger to a feeling of guilt, resentment, embarrassment or even more anger. Then THESE emotions can feed on themselves and exacerbate the problem. Other times you might derive a sense of relief and release from the stress.
Either way, understanding your emotions and being able to process and control them is a part of Self Care. It follows that when we take care of ourselves, we are mentally and emotionally better able to address various challenges throughout our day. However, on the flip side, understanding our own patterns of emotions, especially anger, allows us to practice Self Care more fully as well.
The key is to understand where the anger is coming from, identify it and then learn how to appropriately express (or not express) that anger.
What are some ways you “manage” your anger?
Make Happiness Yours,
Susan

Last month PARADE (the Sunday paper insert) featured an article, “The Truth About American Marriage” by Leslie Bennett. Initially, I thought, “uh-oh!” In the media we often hear about break-ups, affairs, divorce, and other unsettling stories of betrayal in all kinds of relationships across our country.
Whenever I hear about more negativity in relationships, I wonder, “What is going on?”
I have a wonderful relationship with my husband, . . . well, today. . .
I say that with tongue in cheek. but more so because that’s the way relationships work - there are ups and downs; some days he’s Mr. Wonderful, other days he’s “the last straw” but EVERY day I love him and we are both committed to each other, no matter what track of the rollercoaster we happen to have fallen that day.
This is just as true in a friendship just as it is true in any intimate relationship.
So, as I sat to read, I braced myself for some more negative news. . . but then, I was pleasantly surprised! Read the rest of this entry »
