BETTER BALANCE: Time is a Choice

August 4th, 2009 by Susan Kim

old watchMany of my clients would like to create more time in their lives. However, it’s not about CREATING more time, it’s about MAKING time for the important things in our life. One thing to consider are the choices that we make throughout our day. Here are a couple of questions to ask yourself to help make decision making easier and to make time for the things that you want.

Have I defined a priority in my life?
When we know what is most important in our lives, sometimes making decisions on a minute by minute basis is easier. The priority that we define is like a set of standards or guidelines for how we want to live. When faced with a decision, call upon those guidelines and the one that makes the most sense for your life will likely show up.

What is the priority for today?
Determine what is the most important task for the day. We all have daily responsibilities which may or may not be different from your life priority. When you set an intention to focus on a certain thing on any given day, more likely than not, it will be addressed quickly and more efficiently, enabling you to move onto the next task. Think about the difference between looking at one main focus point of your day versus looking at a laundry list of “to-do’s.” Which feels easier? Which feels doable?

When you know what your priorities are, in life and on a daily basis, it helps you focus, make decisions that are right for you and take action quicker. This in turn, slowly opens up more minutes in the day for you to make another choice. . . what will you do with the time?

Make Happiness Yours!

This is so true! A great question I ask myself every day is “What will I get done today so that, at the end of the day, I’ll consider today a success?” That question allows me to focus on the one or two really important things that I want to get done and leave everything else aside.

JP - thanks for the additional question to think about, “How can I make today a success?” What a great question! It’s a terrific way to focus your day!
