Accomplish More: Planning as a Family Team
March 6th, 2009 by Susan Kim
In a recent business blog post, I talked about using your team for support in getting ideas, gaining a different perspective and creating more options (Three tips to get through the recession). This strategy is not just for business.
At home, solicit the feedback and suggestions from family members. Call everyone together and discuss the current economic situation as well as the current financial status of YOUR family. Explain to children and teenagers not only what is going on around the world, but also how it is (or could) effect the family. The open communication not only fosters a more positive relationship, but it also gives the other members of your family the chance to offer help, support and contribute to the family. This in turn builds their confidence and teaches youth the importance of accountability and responsibility.
As adults, sometimes we feel it is our duty to shelter children or maybe we feel they have nothing to contribute to such “adult” decisions.”Children should be seen and not heard.” Of course we need to keep our children safe, but part of our role as parents, teachers and guardians is to also give them the ability to live and think independently as individuals.
Perhaps your “family” consists more of close friends and colleagues. In business, I facilitate a gathering of colleagues to support each other called a Master Mind Group. This same concept can work also on a personal level. Have a potluck and share ideas, stories and support with your loved ones. Others may feel overwhelmed and scared, so hosting a supportive event like this can help to dissipate that fear - maybe within yourself as well. Once the conversation starts to flow, solutions and strategies oftentimes start to unfold as well.
With hard times hitting many people, instead of focusing on the fear and the gloom, use this as a time to share, learn, grow and find support with your own family and loved ones. You may very well find that as a team, your family is a lot stronger than you think.
Wishing You Success,
Susan
