Life Balance: Eat Drink and Be Healthy
February 9th, 2009 by Susan Kim
The old adage, “You are what you eat” has much more meaning behind it than just the notion that good health comes from eating good food. It also effects your state of mind and overall wellness. It effects your whole Being.
Last week I shared some super produce items (see “Confessions of a Foodie“). Not only do they benefit your physical health, but you get a lot of “bang for your buck” with each food, mentally. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables provides more balanced and sustained energy, which reduces the risk of mood swings due to spikes and crashes in energy levels. Also, studies have indicated that diets more rich in junk food are linked to higher memory loss, slower thinking and are associated with the onset of ADHD in children and Alzheimer’s in adults.
Compared to a Twinkie snack, that fresh apple is looking pretty appetizing now, isn’t it?
Many foods also do not even provide the nutrients we might expect from them. This is partly due to (1) the kind of foods people put into their mouths - processed, canned, overcooked and fat/sugar rich foods; and (2) the fact that the nutritional value in some foods have been eroded due to science, quality of the soil and other factors.
Following are some food items that are accessible, relatively inexpensive and have health benefits that are “off the charts.” Combined with the super produce items (see “Confessions of a Foodie“), these will help to maintain a more balanced level of energy throughout your day AND help to fight off cancer too!
1. Eggs - This versatile food is a great source of protein and B vitamins, which helps energy levels. It also contains antioxidants and other disease fighting nutrients.
2. Salmon - Fish is considered a “brain food” and rightly so. Salmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which not only helps your heart, but also helps to keep your brain working properly.
3. Tea - Green tea contains antioxidants to ward of breast, digestive and lung cancers, while black tea reduces the risk of heart disease.
4. Wine (yeah!) - I think this is great news. It is no secret that in moderation (1 glass for women, 2 glasses for men) wine is good for your heart, but studies have also shown that those who drank white wine had better lung function than those who abstained or drank other alcoholic drinks. Another study showed that people who drank wine weekly or monthly were less likely to develop dementia, showing it is also beneficial to our mental health!
Eat, Drink and Be Healthy!
Cheers!
Susan
